What a frustrating feeling it is when you buy a new set of earphones and the rubber-tipped earbuds don’t fit or hurt your ears.

Apple has come up with a solution for this problem with their AirPods Pro. Each AirPods Pro set includes three different sets of ear tips of different sizes so that you can adjust them to your ears.

The AirPods Pro also have a fit-test feature (Ear Tip Fit Test) that analyzes whether you’ve used the right ear tips and helps you figure out which size fits you with the help of an internal microphone.

However, users have found that it’s not so clear how to remove the AirPod ear tips if you want to change or clean them.

In this guide, we’ll share the steps on how to remove the AirPods Pro ear tips.

How to remove the AirPod Pro ear tips

The AirPods Pro earbuds’ silicone tips act like a seal when you insert them into your ears, creating a noise cancellation effect. These small silicone ear tips also keep the AirPods Pro from falling out from your ears.

You should always remove these tips if you want to clean them or the earbuds. This is how to do it:

  1. Hold the AirPod with one hand and pinch the ear tip with two fingers of the other hand.
  2. Invert the tip gently and pull it straight until you hear it click off.
  3. Examine and clean the speaker of the AirPod if necessary.
  4. Next, choose a new pair of ear tips from the box to install: Small, Medium, or Large.

Your AirPod Pro earbuds come with medium-size ear tips when you take them out of the box. If your AirPods feel loose, choose a bigger size. If they feel tight, choose a smaller size.

  1. To attach the new pair of ear tips to the buds, line up the oval on the edge of the replacement tip with the oval on the mounting surface on the AirPod.
  2. Gently press the tip in until it clicks into place. If the tip doesn’t click and install easily, don’t force it, but make sure it’s aligned properly.
  3. Push back the edges of the silicone tip if you inverted it during removal.
  4. Repeat the steps with the other AirPod Pro.

How to use the AirPod Ear Tip Fit Test to choose the best ear tip size

If you can’t decide which ear tip size is best for you, you can try the Ear Tip Fit Test. Remember that in order to do the test, your iPhone needs to be running iOS 13.2 or later.

Note: Before you start the test, make sure you turn your Bluetooth on and connect your AirPods Pro to your iPhone.

  1. Put your AirPods in your ears with the most comfortable ear tips.
  2. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  3. Tap on ‘Bluetooth’.
  4. Find the AirPods Pro on the list of Bluetooth devices and tap on the ‘i’ info icon to the right.
  5. On the AirPods settings page, tap on the ‘Ear Fit Tip Test’.
  6. Tap ‘Continue’.
  7. When you are ready to take the test, tap on ‘Play’. You’ll hear a few seconds of music playing on your AirPods to test the quality of the seal between the headphone and your ear and the noise cancellation.
  8. If the ear tips are the correct size, you’ll see a message saying ‘Good Seal’ in green below the AirPod on the iPhone screen. If the size is not correct, you’ll see a message in yellow reading ‘Adjust or Try a Different Ear Tip’. In this case, try a different size ear tip and rerun the test.
