What are channel points on Twitch?

Twitch channel points are a program in Twitch that allows streamers to reward viewers and subscribers on this platform by watching a stream. So when a viewer watches a stream on Twitch, they are more likely to get channel points given by the Twitch Affiliates and Partners.

In addition, community members can use these channel points to claim emotes and other customizable rewards from a streamer.

Quick Note: If you are a viewer, you have separate channel points for each streamer you follow on your account.

How to get channel points on Twitch?

By now, we have established that channel points on Twitch are automatically accumulated when you watch channels on Twitch. However, there are several ways in which a viewer can get channel points while they are on the Twitch platform, meaning:

By watching a stream

If you are a non-subscriber that watches the stream, you will get 10 points every 5 minutes of life watch time on that stream).

By actively watching a channel

By watching streak 2

If a viewer returns to two consecutive streams, they will get 300 channel points, but each instance must be a minimum of 10 minutes in length. The second instance must end at least 30 minutes before the start of the second stream.

By watching streak 3

If a viewer returns for a third stream viewing the same channel, they will get 300 channel points. Also importantly, each stream must be no longer than 10 minutes, and there must be at least 30 minutes between the end and start of each stream to the other.

By watching streak 4

The rules are the same for watching streak 4; however, a viewer will get 400 channel points this time.

By watching streak 5+

The channel points for the fifth consecutive live stream follow a protocol of a minimum of 10 minutes in length and at least 30 minutes between the consecutive live streams that are being viewed. If a viewer manages to do this, they will receive 450 channel points.

By 1st cheer

Anonymous cheering will not get any rewards/channel points; only the first cheer on a channel within a period of 30 days shall be rewarded with 350 channel points.

By 1st gifted subscription

If a viewer is gifting their first subscription in 30 days, they will earn 500 channel points. Again, this won’t work for those that are gifting anonymously.

Another plus is that you can keep up a watch streak if you don’t want to miss watching a streamer on their broadcasts, and in this way, you’ll receive more points for returning to consecutive streams.

Let’s not forget that having a subscription will get you more points when you watch that particular channel, getting a higher multiplier based on what kind of subscription you have.

What are the channel point perks of a Twitch subscriber?

Once you are a subscriber, you can earn channel points faster than any other, and these are the three categories under which subscribers fall:

  • Category 1 - watching increases channel points by a multiplier of 1.2.

  • Category 2 - watching increases channel points by a multiplier of 2.
