Apple Watch users that travel regularly through different time zones have surely noticed that their smartwatch switches between time zones automatically.

How the Apple Watch does this is it draws information from the iPhone that is connected. This is extremely helpful, especially when you’re carrying all your luggage, and can’t get to your phone immediately.

However, since the primary resource of the Apple Watch for switching between time zones is the iPhone, can you do this without having access to your smartphone?

Unfortunately, no. Time zones on the Apple Watch cannot be altered without having access to your iPhone.

There are several workarounds you can try and get a similar effect as changing the time zones. Bear in mind that this can’t be done without having access to your iPhone.

How do I change the time zone on my Apple Watch?

The gadget itself contains all the needed ‘tools’ to detect time zone changes, but for some reason, the changes can’t be done without having access to the iPhone that is linked to the Apple Watch.

In the list below, we’ll show you all the possible ways to change time zones on the Apple Watch while having access to your iPhone.

Method 1: Using the World Clock feature on the Apple Watch

On the World Clock feature, you can add whichever city you wish to add, and the smartwatch will show the time you’ve chosen.

To do this, you need to use your iPhone:

  1. On your iPhone, open the ‘Clock’ app, and at the bottom-left, tap on ‘World Clock’.
  2. In the upper-right corner, tap on the ‘+’ sign.
  3. In the Search Bar, type in the name of the city you wish to add.

After finishing these steps, you will have added the city to the World Clock feature. The following steps need to be done on your Apple Watch:

  1. Press and hold on the Apple Watch screen until the face zooms out.
  2. Beneath, tap on the ‘Customize’ button.
  3. Using the Digital Crown, scroll down to the bottom, until you see a gray outline around the widget for the ‘World Clock’.
  4. Using the Digital Crown, find the time you wish to add to your Apple Watch face.
  5. Press on the Digital Crown once to go back to the ‘Customize’ screen, and then once again to exit that screen.

Method 2: Changing the Date & Time on your Apple Watch

With this method, you’ll change the time/date as needed. This will not alter the time zone settings, but rather adjust the time to the time zone you’re in at the moment.

  1. On your Apple Watch, open the ‘Settings’ app.
  2. Find the ‘Clock’ tab, and open it.
  3. Tap the ‘+0 min’ feature, and using the side button (Digital Crown), add the extra minutes. Tap ‘Set’ when finished.

Changing the Time Zone when traveling

To make sure your Apple Watch gets updated when traveling to a different time zone, you need to do the following:

  1. Make sure you have access to the paired iPhone.
  2. The iPhone needs to have access to ‘Location Services’.
  3. Strong Internet connection.

If all of the above is provided for the iPhone, the smartphone will have a new time zone set automatically. If the iPhone is showing you the wrong time, restart your iPhone, and the changes will be automatically made on both devices.
