If you are a person who likes to keep track of your health metrics while exercising, you’d be glad to hear that Apple GymKit allows you to connect your Apple Watch to Peloton Bike+ and the Peloton Digital App.

Although Apple Watch tracks your movement, and the numbers on your Peloton Bike can motivate you to push yourself, syncing the two devices during a workout can give you the most accurate insights into your overall fitness and performance, including distance, power, cadence, calories burned and heart rate.

So if you want to connect your Apple Watch to Peloton Bike, keep on reading. We’ll explain the process step-by-step.

Apple Watch can’t connect to all Peloton Equipment

Bear in mind that you can directly connect your Apple Watch only to Peloton Bike+.

If you want to pair your watch to Peloton Tread, Tread+, or the original Peloton Bike, you'll have to start a separate workout on the watch's built-in workout app and the equipment.

Also, syncing an Apple Watch and Peloton Bike+ is only possible for cycling classes and not combined workouts, such as the strength and cardio-focused Bike Bootcamp.

How to connect Apple Watch to Peloton Bike+

Before you proceed to connect the devices, keep in mind that Peloton is compatible with Apple Series 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Also, you need to enable GymKit on your Apple Watch:

  1. Open the Apple Watch App on your iPhone.
  2. Go to the Workout app.
  3. Scroll down to ‘Detect Gym Equipment’ and enable it.

When you’ve enabled the GymKit, continue to connect the smartwatch to Peloton.

The good news is that Peloton's Bike+ has Apple's GymKit on board, which means you can simply hold the Apple Watch to the top of the screen on the Bike+ to connect them.

Follow the steps to pair the devices:

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the ‘My Watch’ tab
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and toggle on 'Detect Gym Equipment'.
  4. Select a ride on the Peloton Bike+ and press ‘Start’.
  5. Hold your Apple Watch up to the top of the screen.
  6. Tap on ‘Content’ on your Apple Watch.
  7. Finally, press the ‘Start’ button on the Bike+ to begin a ride.

Once they’re paired, Peloton will automatically start a workout on your Apple Watch. It will also use the heart rate monitor on the Watch to show your heart rate on the Bike+'s screen and help determine your Strive Score.

When you finish a ride, the workout will automatically finish on the Apple Watch as well. Also, you’ll be able to find the post-workout details in the Activity app on your iPhone and in the Peloton Digital app.

If you're having trouble connecting your Apple Watch to the bike, or the Peloton Bike+ is not pairing properly with your watch, try restraining your Apple Watch: Hold the Digital Crown and side button at the same time until you see the Apple logo appear. Or try turning your Bike+ off and on again.

How to track heart rate using Apple Watch on Peloton Bike, Tread or Tread+

As we mentioned, you can’t pair Apple Watch to the original Peloton Bike, the Peloton Tread and Tread+ because they don’t have the Apple GymKit integrated.

But there are third-party apps that enable you to use the heart rate monitor on Apple Watch with the Peloton Bike, Tread and Tread+. Some of them are BlueHeart, ECHO Heart Rate from the Watch and HeartCast.

Note: Some of these apps have a time limit before you have to pay, while others contain adverts before they start tracking your heart rate.

If you decide to try one of the apps, download it to your iPhone and Apple Watch and follow the steps to pair your Apple Watch with your Peloton Bike, Tread or Tread+.

  1. Open the third-party app.
  2. Set up the app as per the instructions.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth.
  4. Choose a workout on your Peloton.
  5. Tap on the 'Heart Rate Monitor' tab under the start button.
  6. The app you've chosen will appear under Available Devices.
  7. Tap 'Connect'.

Once you've connected the app and the devices, you’ll see your heart rate on the left of the screen taken from your Apple Watch.

The third-party app is not as smooth as using Apple GymKit on the Peloton Bike+, but it’s a workaround if you have Peloton Bike, Tread or Tread+ and want to use your Apple Watch to monitor your heart rate during a workout.
