How to Get Sound on Reddit: A Step by Step Guide

Reddit is an amazing platform for news, discussions, and other useful content that allows users to upload videos but by default, the sound on the Reddit app will be turned off. However, that does not mean that users cannot listen to the sound of the video they like.

Thankfully, there are some workarounds that allow users to download Reddit videos with sound on both Android and iOS.

How to get sound on the Reddit app

Step 1: Enable the adult content

If you want to get sound on the Reddit app, the first thing you have to do is to enable the adult content of Reddit from its official website.

The steps to enable this are the following:

1. Navigate to www.reddit.com on your preferred web browser.
2. Sign in to your Reddit account.
3. Tap on the menu icon and tap on Settings.
4. Then, tap on Account Settings.
5. Lastly, tap on Feed Settings, and under CONTENT PREFERENCES, enable Adult content.

Once you do this, you will be able to see adult and NSFW (not safe for work) content in your feed and search results.

Step 2: Download the app Apollo for Reddit

Since you already know that the Reddit app mutes the audio for videos in NSFW communities, there is no direct option for you to unmute the audio in the Reddit app. Therefore, to bypass this, you’ll need to download the Apollo app.

Important Note: The Apollo app is only available on the App Store for iOS users.

In case you are using an Android device, you can download the sync app from Google Play Store.

Step 3: Sign in with Reddit

After successfully downloading the Apollo app, these are the steps to follow to take:

1. Open the Apollo app.
2. Sign in with Reddit by tapping on Account (bottom bar).
3. Then, tap on Sign in with Reddit.
4. Enter your Reddit account username and password.
5. Lastly, allow Apollo to connect to your Reddit account by scrolling to the bottom and tapping on Allow.

Step 4: Find the video that you want to listen to

Now that you’ve connected Apollo to your Reddit account, you have to navigate to the video that you want to listen to the sound of.

For example, you want to turn on the sound on a video from the NSFW community. There are only two simple steps to turn the sound on:

1. After locating the video, tap on it to expand it.
2. Tap on the speaker icon to unmute the video.

Why do Reddit videos have no sound?

As we mentioned above, it is because the video contains adult content and Reddit automatically mutes any NSFW videos. This is when you’ll get the message “This video doesn’t have sound” - meaning the video is automatically muted.

Also, even if the original video has sound, you will not be able to listen to it. You can always try to turn the sound on by tapping on the speaker icon but if that does not work, you’ll have to use the help of third-party tools.
