Google voice typing is a handy Google feature on Android devices that allows you to type and edit text by voice command without using a keyboard. The Google voice assistant is especially useful when driving or you are rushing to type something on your phone. However, sometimes you may want to turn off your Google voice typing.

You might think it’s too invasive or in a crowded place where you want to type your message privately and not use voice dictation. Whatever the reason may be, disabling the Google voice typing feature is straightforward.

How to turn off Google voice typing in your Android phone settings

This is how to turn off Google voice typing on your Android phone settings:

1. Open Settings on your phone.
2. Scroll down and select ‘System’.

3. Tap on ‘Languages & input’. (Some users may find this option in the general settings menu, depending on the Android model).

4. Select ‘On-screen keyboard’. (You might also see the option ‘Virtual Keyboard’. This option may only be available to users who have used a physical keyboard on their phones.)

5. Next, select ‘Manage on-screen keyboards’ or tap on ‘Configure Input Method’.

6. Turn the toggle next to ‘Google voice typing’ to the off position.

Test if Google voice typing is disabled.

How to turn off Google Voice Typing in the Gboard settings

If Google Voice typing is enabled in Gboard or another keyboard you use on your phone, then turning it off in the Language & Input settings may not work. You will have to turn it off in the Gboard (or another keyboard app) keyboard settings.

1. Tap on the Settings app on your phone.
2. Open System and select ‘Languages & input’.
3. Tap on ‘On-screen keyboard’ or ‘Virtual Keyboard’ depending on the phone model.
4. Select ‘Gboard’.

5. Select ‘Voice typing’ and turn off the toggle next to ‘Use voice typing’.

Afterward, check if Google voice typing is indeed turned off. If Google Assistant starts loading when you try to use Voice typing, make sure to disable Enhanced Voice Typing in the Gboard Settings. If you have an HTC phone, you need to disable HTC Sense Input.

How to turn off Google voice typing in the apps using Gboard

You can also access Gboard settings to turn off voice typing in any app you can type text.

1. Open an app you can type in, such as Messages or Gmail.
2. Tap on a field where you can enter text.
3. When the keyboard appears, tap on the ‘Settings’ icon at the top of the keyboard.
4. Select ‘Voice typing’.
5. Turn the toggle next to ‘Assistant voice typing’ off.

How to turn off ‘Hey Google’ in the Google Assistant Settings

If you are using Google voice search and have Google Assistant enabled on your phone, it can also perform tasks like typing. This is how to turn off Google Assistant on your Android:

1. Launch Google Assistant on your phone. Tap on the home button at the bottom of your phone’s home screen.
2. Next, tap on your profile picture in the top-right corner.

3. Scroll down and tap on ‘Hey Google and Voice Match’.

4. Alternatively, open the Google app on your phone > tap on your profile picture > select ‘Settings’ > ‘Voice’ > ‘Voice Match’.
5. Toggle the switch next to ‘Hey Google’ to the off position and confirm if prompted.
