Did you know that you can show full-size images on Tumblr with just a few tweaks?

If your image files are not bigger than 10 MB and are in JPG, PNG, or BMP format, they will be easily displayed in full resolution. However, sometimes, when people upload an image to Tumblr, it might get resized to fit in the parameters of different themes.

In cohesion with that, in order to maintain the original size of an image, you have to edit your theme’s HTML within the Tumbler’s blog customization page.

Down below, we gathered and listed all the steps you need to take in order to get the full screen on Tumbler.

So, check out this blog post to learn how to do it.

How to see the full screen on Tumblr (desktop version)

Step 1: Enable high-resolution images

  1. Navigate to Tumblr's official website and log into your account.
  2. Click on the gear-shaped button labeled as Settings.

Tumblr Settings

  1. Then, choose the blog you want to customize and click on the Customize option in Theme options.
  2. Then, click on the Dashboard link.
  3. Next, in the dashboard options, check the Show Full-Size Photos — this will display full-size photos on your dashboard.
  4. From the right menu, click on the name of your blog and then click on the Edit Theme option.
  5. Under the template image, click on the option Edit HTML (left side of the screen).
  6. Locate the tag {block:Photo} and on the same tab add “{block:HighRes} {/block:HighRes}”.
  7. Exit and save those changes in Preferences and click on the Save Settings option (bottom left).

Once you do this successfully, the change will be adapted to the template in order to accept and appear in larger, high-resolution photos.

Important Note: Your theme might have some width restrictions. If this happens, you should search your theme’s HTML for width to locate any width CSS parameters and change any widths that are associated with photo posts.

Step 2: Upload an original size image

  1. Open Tumblr as usual.
  2. To add an image, click on the Photo icon (top of the main screen).
  3. You can upload a photo from your hard drive or by typing in the URL where the image is hosted into the same tab.
  4. Then, click on the option Create Post (bottom - left corner) — the image that will display on your blog will be with its original dimensions.

  2. Click on the username of your blog (top menu bar).
  3. Then, click on Customize Appearance (right side menu).
  4. Next, click to open the Advanced drop-down menu.

  6. Lastly, to save the changes, click on the option Save + Close (upper right corner).

Things to keep in mind for good resolution on Tumblr picture posts

  • For the dashboard posts - the magic number of pixels that is required is 500 - meaning all posts that are up to 500 pixels will fit it and others will be resized to fit that width.
  • For the theses - in case your images are seen on your individual page, you better check that your theme does not have an image size bigger than 500 pixels. Scaling the image up can make the image look blurry.
  • Photosets - they can include up to 10 images and these layouts can have different sizes, some at full 500 and others scaled down to 250 pixels. Don’t resize the pictures to be smaller than 500 pixels.
  • High resolution - you can use a larger size of an image that users can see when they click on the photo. This only works if you haven’t set a click-through link on the photo and the high resolution of the image can be up to 1280p x 1920p.
