What is causing my PS5 to turn on automatically?

Before we dive into details on how to fix the problem, you should know what might be causing your console to turn on automatically:

  • When a PS5 gaming console is connected to a TV via HDMI, each time you turn on your TV the console will activate by itself.
  • The PS5 being put in rest mode, instead of being turned off.
  • The console is attempting to download updates or upload data to the cloud.

How do I stop my PS5 from turning on by itself?

Since a lot of PS5 users have reported this issue, a number of possible solutions have surfaced among the gaming community.

  1. Turning off Internet connection when you have Rest Mode activated

The ‘Rest Mode’ feature has an implemented option - ‘Stay connected to the Internet’. However, when this option is active, the console will be turned on by itself, even when the ‘Rest Mode’ option is activated, because the console is attempting to download updates, and upload data while the console is not being used.

To turn this feature off, follow these steps:

  1. From the dashboard, open ‘Settings’ by clicking on the gear icon.
  2. Find the ‘Power Settings’ section in the left section of the screen, and click on ‘Features Available in Rest Mode’.
  3. The ‘Stay connected to the Internet’ and ‘Enable Turning on PS5 from network’ options should be turned off.

PS5 consoles may be triggered to turn on by themselves if the ‘HDMI Device Link’ option is activated from ‘Settings’.

Hence, you should disable the PS5 HDMI connection.

  • From the dashboard, open ‘Settings’ by clicking on the gear icon.
  • From the list of options, click on ‘System’.
  • In the left section of the screen, find HDMI, and toggle off the button next to ‘Enable HDMI Device link’.

3. Turning off ‘Remote play’

It is possible for the PS5 to turn itself on if the ‘Remote Play’ option is activated. To make sure, disable it by following these steps:

  • From the dashboard, open ‘Settings’ by clicking on the gear icon.
  • From the list of options, click on ‘System’, and find the ‘Remote Play’ option, and toggle the button next to it.

In case none of the above mentioned possible solutions seem to be fixing the issue for you, you could additionally try to restart the device if you haven’t already, or checking the batteries of the remote.

If these two don’t fix the issue either, you should consider taking your PS5 to an authorized repair shop.
