Using Instagram’s DM feature can sometimes feel overwhelming. Whether you’re receiving too many messages, or you’re simply annoyed by the constant buzzing of your phone, we get it.

We also have a how-to video guide on disabling DMs on Instagram - so check that out.

People get the feeling that you have to be available at any time, and it's getting harder and harder to keep your privacy to yourself, so it’s completely reasonable that you would want to turn off the DM feature for a while or permanently, while still being on the app. Not receiving message requests can be done in a few easy steps.

Bear in mind that turning off your notifications does not mean you won't be receiving messages or message requests further on. To completely shut down the messaging feature, you'll need to get to the more hidden sections of Instagram. We found a way, so you don't have to - keep reading to find out how!

How to Disable Direct Messages on Instagram from people you don’t follow

To completely disable the DMs feature for people you don’t follow, you’ll need to follow these steps.

  1. Open your Instagram profile, and click on the three horizontal lines in the top right corner.
  2. Open ‘Settings’, tap on the ‘Privacy’ section, and tap on ‘Messages’.
  3. Once you’ve opened the ‘Messages’ section, in the middle of the screen there will be an option labeled ‘Others on Instagram’. Tap on this.
  4. After you’ve been redirected to a new page, select ‘Don’t receive requests’.

This action will completely prevent users you’re not following from sending you messages.

How to Disable Direct Messages on Instagram from everyone

To completely disable the messaging feature, meaning receiving no messages whatsoever, you'll have to go through a similar process as the one above.

  1. Open your Instagram profile, and click on the three horizontal lines in the top right corner.
  2. Open ‘Settings’, tap on the ‘Privacy’ section, and click on ‘Messages’.
  3. After opening the ‘Messages’ section, go over the same process we’ve mentioned for each category - click on ‘Don’t receive messages'.

After you’ve finished with each category, your Instagram DMs will be completely shut down.

Other actions you can take to limit the number of message notifications you’re receiving

If you don’t think that completely turning off requests and messages is what you want to go for, we have other suggestions. You can limit other people’s messages with the simplest step - muting your notifications. You won’t receive direct messages notifications, and this will give you a chance to only answer messages when you feel like it, or not at all.

Another possible solution to this is turning off your Activity Status, this way no one on your follower's list will know when exactly you’re available and it will take the pressure off you having to answer their messages off your shoulders.
