Google Home and Ring Doorbell are popular gadgets among smart home lovers.

The Ring doorbell is a smart, wireless-connected device. So as such, you should be able to make it work with other connected home devices, such as Google Home.

But many people have come across issues regarding their compatibility. So that’s why in this blog post, we are going to explain if you can actually add your Ring Doorbell to a Google Home device, how to add it, and what to do once they are linked.

Does the Ring doorbell work with Google Home?

The short answer is - yes, the Ring video doorbell can be paired with Google Home smart speaker, and you’ll be able to control some aspects of the Ring device.

However, only to a limited extent. The two devices are from competing manufacturers, which means that not all of Ring's features are available.

Nevertheless, Google Home can be connected to a Ring camera, and the devices can track when the motion sensors and doorbells are set off, but they won’t alert you if there’s someone at the door.

Also, one of the biggest downsides to using Ring and Google Home as part of an integrated smart home system is that you can’t see the Ring security cameras through the Google Home console.

This means that Google Home can recognize that the Ring camera is detecting someone at the door, it won’t let you know and you won’t be able to see them.

Despite the limitations, there are still ways you can use Google Home and Ring together.

You can use Google Home voice commands to:

  • Check your device's health and battery life.
  • Toggle motion alerts.
  • Determine the last time you had a visitor.
  • And even record a short video.

How to install Ring to Google Home

Before you link these two devices, make sure you have these three apps installed on your phone:

  1. Google Home - You can download the app for iPhone or Android.
  2. Google Assistant - If you have Android, the app may be already pre-installed on your phone. If you have an iPhone or don’t have it installed on your Android, you need to download it.
  3. Ring app - You can download the app for iPhone or Android as well.

To add the Ring video doorbell to Google Home:

  1. Open the Google Assistant Ring services web page on a web browser.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account to access Google Assistant.
  3. Once you’ve signed in, click on ‘Send to Device’ at the top right corner of the page. You’ll see a menu where you can select the type of Google Home device you're pairing with Ring. Select the Google Home device you want to connect to the Ring.
  4. If you see a Link button instead of the Send to Device button, that means you need to link your Ring account. To do this, click the blue ‘Link’ text in the upper right of the Google Home Assistant Ring page. In the pop-up window, click ‘Link’ again.
  5. You will receive a notification Google Assistant app on your phone or tablet, asking for permission to connect to Ring. Click ‘Yes’ to proceed.
  6. Sign in to your Ring account by entering your Ring username and password in the authorization form. When done, click ‘Sign in’. You may be asked to enter your credentials two times along with a two-factor authentication code sent to your phone number.
  7. Click the ‘Authorize’ button to complete the linking process.

The setup process is complete and now you can access Ring from your Google Home.

How to use Ring doorbell with Google Home

Although Ring works with Google Home with limitations, once you connect them, you can ask Google Home to perform various tasks with Ring.

Say ‘Hey Google, talk to Ring’ or ‘Hey Google, ask Ring…’. After Google Home accesses Ring, you’ll hear Ring ask what you want to do.

You can say some of the following phrases to prompt it to give you an answer:

  • "Turn motion alerts on" or "turn motion alerts off."
  • "Turn ring alerts on" or "turn ring alerts off."
  • "When was the last time the doorbell rang?"
  • "Start recording video."
  • "What is the status of the doorbell?" or "what is the health of the doorbell?"
  • “What’s on my Ring Doorbell?”
  • “Show my Doorbell’s name.”
